ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. This system will be in effect for 2024 and is an electronic system designed by the European Union to pre-screen travelers from visa-exempt countries before they enter the Schengen Area, which is a group of European countries that have abolished internal borders for the free and unrestricted movement of people.
The ETIAS system aims to enhance security by identifying potential security risks and irregular migrants before they reach the Schengen countries. Travelers from countries that do not require a visa to enter the Schengen Area would need to apply for an ETIAS authorization online before their trip. The authorization would be valid for multiple short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period over a span of three years.
